Development Squad for Multi Events in Munster


Please find details below of a new initiative to help develop Multi Events in Munster for u15-u20 athletes.

Munster Mutli Event Development Squad
There will be some development days for Munster Multi Event athletes taking place at Nenagh Olympic indoor stadium before Christmas. The dates are as follows:
- Saturday 6th October
- Saturday 3rd November
- Saturday 1st December
The timetable for Saturday 6th October is as follows:
- 11.30am Check in
- 12.00 Introduction and start of training
- 1.30 Lunch Break
- 2.00-3.30 Training
The training will be run by Munster Squad Coaches Denis Finnerty, Chris Regan and a number of other coaches. The sessions are open to all athletes u15-u20 in 2012 age groups and the cost per session is €5. To be part of the squad please e-mail Chris Regan ASAP at chrisregan@eircom.net.

Coaching Workshops in Munster Sept/October


- Wed 26th September: Jumps Workshop at Castleisland Track from 7-9pm. The session is open to all athletes/coaches aged 11+ only and the cost is €5 payable at registration from 6.40pm-6.55pm. Coaches Rosemary Daniels High Jump and Denis Finnegan Long Jump will be taking the session.

Wed 3rd October: Throws Workshop at An Riocht AC Track in Castleisland Co Kerry from 7-9pm. The session is open to all athletes/coaches aged 12+ only and the cost is €5 payable at registration from 6.40pm-6.55pm. Munster Performance Squad Coaches John Sheehan Javelin and Jerry Horgan Shot/Discus will be taking the session. POSTPONED

- Mon 8th October: Strength & Conditioning Workshop at Cork IT from 7-9pm. This will be held upstairs in the red brick building situated right next to the new stand at the track. The session is open to all athletes/coaches aged 12+ only and the cost is €5 payable at registration from 6.40pm-6.55pm. Gordon Brett Strength & Conditioning Coach Munster Rugby will take the session and it will cover the following topic: Functional Screening for Athletic Performance and Injury Prevention. The workshop will cover how we can improve performance by ensuring that each major joint's ability to produce power and complete technical movement's are not being restricted through poor mobility/stability of the muscles that effect joint range of movement and power production. We will also cover how to assess athletes movements and discover compensations or limiting factors in their movement that may decrease performance or increase their risk of injury. The workshop will be both theory and practical based and is aimed at athletes and coaches of all levels. At the end the participants will have an understanding of how to screen and apply practical strategies to improve the performance of athletes and reduce their risk of injury.  POSTPONED

- Fri 19th October: Jumps Workshop at Cork IT Track from 7-9pm. The session is open to all athletes/coaches aged 11+ only and the cost is €5 payable at registration from 6.40pm-6.55pm. The workshop will be run by Canice Kennedy with content to be confirmed closer to the date.  POSTPONED

We back in training

Cross country running requires a different stride length, a different leg action and a different foot plant from road & track running. These things cannot be picked up instantly; they will only become instinctive if the runner adopts specific cross country training.

Training for all age groups taking place at Sandy Lane, Banna on Saturdays from 1:30-2:30pm.

Cross country training starts this Saturday, 15 September.
Time: 1:30pm.
Venue: Sandy Lane, Banna
€2 per session
Please have set of clothes appropriate for weather conditions on the day.

Late results -August/September

Congratulation to Darragh Lowth on winning gold medal in U12 600m in HSE Community National finals in Athlone.
Darragh is representing Ardfert/Kilmoyley.







At Dingle Marathon St.Brendan's AC made starting line with Pat Sheehy (F4L) in Half Marathon 1h50 and Artur Nowak in first Full Marathon, finishing in 3h58min.




Well done to Stephen Walsh on his debut in competitive race walking. He participated in the second race run by An Riocht 5K WALK-JOG-RUN series and finished in very good time of 34min.

Munster XC Squad Day at Banna


A Munster Squad Cross-Country session will take place on Saturday 29th September at Banna Beach Co. Kerry. This is open to all endurance athletes in Munster that have achieved the following criteria:
1) 2012 ages u14 (born 1999) - u20 (born 1993)
2) Have finished top 20 in a Munster 'A' Cross-Country Championship in 2011 or 2012 in school or club championships
3) Have finished top 5 in a Munster 'A' Outdoor T&F Championship distance event (800m/1500m/3000m/5000m/Steeplechase)

All athletes are encouraged to attend and also their personal coaches. Athletes should meet at Banna Beach Car Park (about 1km past Banna Beach Hotel) at 10.30am sharp for registration and bring €5 with them. Athletes should also bring training gear, warm clothes, towel and swimming gear. One of our guest coaches for the day will be legendary Irish coach Br John Dooley.
The timetable for the day is as follows:
  • 10.30am- Registration Banna Beach Car Park
  • 10.45am- Athletes split into various groups
  • 11.00am- Warm up
  • 11.30am- Start of session on beach (Mixture of steady state running and sand dune work)
  • 12.30pm- Warm Down
  • 1pm- Talk in Banna Beach Hotel
  • 1.45pm- Finish
Can all clubs please make sure that all athletes who have achieved the above criteria for the squad are notified about the squad day and please encourage them and their personal coaches to attend. I look forward to meeting all the squad members in Banna.
The full Munster Track & Field Squad for the 2012/2013 season will be using a similiar format to last year with some changes. Full details will be with all clubs in October. Being selected for the Cross-Country session on the 29th of September does not mean an athlete is on the T&F squad for the year, this is a special cross-country squad day with another XC day planned for November.
