Tralee Marathon & Half Marathon 2014

Tralee International Half & Full Marathon - Year 2.
Routes for both distances were altered for the last few miles from last year but Barrow Hill stood firm, contrary to popular belief that Hurricane David flattened Barrow Hill.
It's still there and there is almost 400 witnesses from last Sunday that can confirm this fact.
For many runners The Kerries was a greater challenge, given that it's over 20 miles in to the race.
Numbers of participants were down in Full distance for various reasons. Organisers will have to find out why so any feedback should help in the future as Tralee does offer great marathon routes and is well up with other marathons on offer in Kerry.
On the other hand, Half Marathon had an increase in its number of participants, which is great to see.

The first runner to cross the line in the Full marathon was Gary O'HANLON (1), in a time of  02:26:52. Second was  Banna 10K 2012 winner - Julio Cesar CASTRO (45), in  02:38:33 and third was An Riocht James DORAN (92)  02:45:27.
The first female runner home was Ann Marie HOLLAND (456),(winner of Banna 10K in 2012 & 2013) in 02:55:20, second was Col Conway (57) in 3:22:06 and third was Nora Barry (10) in 3:27:18.

In the half-marathon, the first runner over the line was  David MANSFIELD (1410) in 01:12:09. Second was Simon MANGAN (1846) in  01:14:28, and third was his Gneeveguilla AC clubmate  Robert PURCELL (1668), in  01:15:36.

The first female in the half-marathon was  Maria McCARTHY (1815) who ran the course in  01:22:09 .Deirdre NAGLE (1511) was second in a time of  01:27:20, and Caitriona BARRY (1019) was third, in  01:28:11 .

This event was also part of the County Marathon Championship. Derek Griffin, running for St Brenadan's AC, achieved a bronze medal. Congratulations to Derek on his great performance.

Overall the Club was well represented in both  marathons with many PB's being achieved on the day. Special mention to Catherine Burke who ran a fine race in what was her first ever half marathon.

Road Race updates, part 2 - February 2014

Our New York based runner Kieran O'Mahony was in action at TOKYO MARATHON 2014.
In Tokyo’s second year as a World Marathon Major, more than 36,000 athletes crossed the start line on a cool, overcast day in Japan’s capital city. The conditions proved to be perfect for marathon racing, as Chumba bettered the men’s course record by more than a minute (previously 2:06:50 set by Kenya’s Dennis Kimetto last year), and Tsegaye carved more than three minutes off the women’s course record (previously 2:25:28 set by Ethiopia’s Atsede Habtamu in 2012).

Kieran ran very well, finishing in an excellent time of 3:14:06 - Boston Marathon qualifying time.
